Class began with group time (30 min).

Prof. Allred then spent a few min. talking about the five worksheets that will be due by the end of term.
- 1 or 2 are due before spring break - They can be written on online readings -Blue/Yellow book will not work for these assignments.

Topic of Lecture:
The Rational Punishment
-Example from "The Ethical Assasin" - Conversation between Melford and Lem regarding why prison's exist.
-Normative Claim = having to do with an ideal standard or model. You should do something.
-Example) Prof. Allred's purse is laughable because we hold a normative claim that male's don't carry purse's.
-Ideology = a way of looking at things - can be good or bad.
-Example) Politician being conservative or liberal.
-Jeremy Bentham - 1748-1832 - Father of Utilitarianism (category of consequentialism).
-Active in British politics.
-Focused on Prison reform and education - We still model prison's today after his ideals.
-Questioned how prisons lead to good outcomes.
- Questioned how can we make prisons more successful
-Bentham's definition of punishment (From Ross Harrison)
-The proper aim of punishment, as of anything else, is to produce pleasure and prevent pain. Now all punishment is in itself a pain. Therefore, for Bentham, all punishment is in itself harm.
-Questions asked to class:
Why do people put up with pain? Can we inflict pain on others?
-Example) Shots and exercise.

Two Theories of Punishment:
1) Deterrent – scare tactic/threatening punishment
2) Rehabilitation – trying to help people, using education, religion, and trade.
