Animal Liberation by Peter Singer

Speciesism—prejudice that favors one's species over every other

We should treats animals the same as human because they can suffer and experience joy just like we do. Animals should have the same rights as humans

Bentham sees that animals can suffer just like humans can so they should have equal rights.

Singer points out that severely mentally disabled people are no smarter then animals but we still treat them with more respect then animals. This disproves the argument that to be considered equal to humans a living creature needs the ability to speak or make moral decisions.

Singer sees speciesism as equally wrong as racism, yet most people would be considered a speciesist. Most people would feed a starving child over a starving dog; this would make them a speciesist. They chose a human over another species.
